Plans and Runtime Credits
What each Rootsy plan enforces (computers, memory, storage, domains, monthly Runtime Credits), what spends credits, what happens when they run out or a plan ends, and how to cancel.
This page covers what each plan enforces, how Runtime Credits pay for awake time, and what happens when credits run out or a plan shrinks or ends. Each account has its own plan. The numbers here are what Rootsy enforces for a new account.
What each plan includes
| Starter | Builder | Pro | Studio | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computers per account | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 |
| Memory per computer | 8 GB | 8 GB | 8 GB | 8 GB |
| Storage per computer | 25 GB | 30 GB | 50 GB | 100 GB |
| Custom domains per account | 2 | 5 | 10 | 20 |
| Runtime Credits each month | $5 | $8 | $12 | $25 |
| Most one computer’s awake hour can cost | $1.9142 | $2.3713 | $3.32825 | $3.4565 |
Every computer has 8 vCPUs on every plan. A root domain and its www count as one custom domain. Storage counts everything on the computer’s disk except the first 4 GB, which the platform uses. Backup limits per plan are on Backups and Reset. Limits that are the same on every plan are on Limits.
A computer counts toward the plan while it exists, including while it’s dormant. Delete one to make room for another.
Choose a plan
You choose a plan when you create your first computer in the app. The create dialog lists the plans, billed monthly or annually, and takes payment before the computer starts building. Billing shows the plan, its renewal date, and the number of computers and domains it allows.
Changing a paid plan isn’t available in the app today. To move to another plan, write to support@rootsy.io. During a trial you can change the plan you picked, or start it early, from Billing.
The dialog can also offer a 7-day trial. Only personal accounts are offered one, and only while Rootsy is enrolling new trials. Organizations get no trial. A trial charges nothing at the start and needs a card. It has Starter’s limits whichever plan you pick, and about 8 hours of awake time in place of Runtime Credits. When the awake time is used up, the computers pause. Start the plan from Billing to use them again, or wait for the trial to end. When the trial ends, the plan you picked starts and is charged. To stop it, cancel the trial from Billing before it ends. Each person and each card gets one trial. Prepaid cards can’t start one.
A plan belongs to one account. Your personal account and each organization have their own plan and their own bill. A plan on one doesn’t cover another. Any member of an organization can manage its plan. See Organizations.
What spends Runtime Credits
A sleeping computer spends no Runtime Credits. Sleep and wake explains when a computer sleeps and wakes.
While a computer is awake, Rootsy measures what it uses and settles the cost every 2 minutes:
| Resource | Rate |
|---|---|
| CPU | 18¢ per CPU-hour of actual use |
| Memory | 11¢ per GB-hour of memory in use |
| Disk, while awake | $0.00171 per GB-hour |
A measured awake hour never costs less than 6¢, even when the computer is idle. It never costs more than the plan’s figure in the table above. When Rootsy can’t measure a stretch of awake time in full, it charges that stretch at 25¢ an hour.
Anything that keeps a computer awake spends credits. That includes visitors to your apps, scheduled requests, an open workspace, Claude Code working, rootsy keep-awake, and commands and file transfers through MCP. Awake time while Rootsy makes, checks or restores a backup, or resets the computer, isn’t charged.
The monthly allowance
Each plan adds Runtime Credits every month. The month starts on the date your plan started, on annual plans too. Unused credits don’t roll over. When a new month starts, the new allowance replaces whatever is left.
Rootsy doesn’t sell credit packs or extra credits. More credits come from the next monthly allowance. Changing plans isn’t available in the app today. To move to a larger plan, write to support@rootsy.io.
When credits run out
An account with less than 1¢ of usable credit can’t wake a computer or create one. When an account can’t fund any more awake time, Rootsy parks its computers.
Parking stops the computer. Its Terminal, Editor, Files and Preview windows close. Its scheduled requests don’t run. Restores, Reset and restarts are refused, and MCP commands fail with box_parked_runtime. Visitors to its address and custom domains get a 503 page, “This website is temporarily unavailable”. Nothing is deleted. Files, backups and domains stay as they are.
The workspace shows “This computer is parked — it’s out of Runtime Credits.” Its Add credits button opens Billing, which doesn’t sell credits. Billing shows “You’re out of Runtime Credits” with the date the monthly credits reset. When credits arrive, Rootsy unparks the computers. Troubleshooting lists these messages.
Over the storage limit
When a computer’s storage goes over its plan’s limit, its Terminal, Editor and uploads pause, and MCP commands fail with storage_over_limit. Its apps keep serving. The Files window stays open so you can delete or download files. The workspace shows “This computer is over its N GB storage allowance.” Everything reopens once the computer is back under 95% of the limit. Rootsy never deletes your files to make room.
When a plan shrinks or ends
A plan ends when you cancel it and the paid period is over, or when payment stops. A plan can also shrink if support moves it to a smaller one. That has the same effect on anything over the new limits.
When an account has more computers than its plan allows, the extra computers go dormant. A dormant computer is asleep and can’t be woken. Its workspace is closed, and visitors get a 503 page, “This website is dormant”. Its files stay, but you can’t open them until the plan has room again. Its backups follow the plan’s retention, so after a plan ends, unpinned backups older than 7 days are deleted. Pinned backups stay. Rootsy keeps the computers you picked on Billing live, or the most recently active ones if you didn’t pick. Dormant computers come back when the plan has room again.
When an account has more custom domains than its plan allows for 24 hours, the newest ones are detached. Their settings stay saved. They reconnect, oldest first, when there’s room. See Domains.
After a plan ends
A personal account needs a plan or a trial before it can create a computer. Without one, Create computer opens the plan step, and Billing shows “Pick a plan when you create a computer.”
When a personal account’s plan ends, the account drops to these limits:
| After a plan ends | |
|---|---|
| Computers | 2 |
| Memory per computer | 4 GB |
| Storage per computer | 10 GB |
| Custom domains | 2 |
| Runtime Credits each month | none |
| Backups | kept 7 days, 5 manual, 3 pins |
Computers and domains over these limits go dormant or detach, as described above. With no monthly credits, the remaining computers park once the leftover credits are spent. Credits already granted stay usable until their month ends. Files stay either way, but a dormant or parked computer’s workspace and MCP tools don’t open, so you can’t reach its files. Unpinned backups older than 7 days are deleted, and pinned backups stay. To keep a copy, download your files and pin the backups you need before the plan ends. To get a plan again, use Create computer.
An organization needs a plan before anyone can create a computer in it. When its plan ends, all its computers go dormant and all its custom domains detach after 24 hours. It gets no automatic backups, no manual backups and no new pins. Unpinned backups older than 7 days are deleted, and pinned backups stay. Its files stay, but nobody can open them until it has a plan again, so download them before the plan ends. Billing shows “Organizations need a plan to run computers”.
Cancel a plan
To cancel, open Billing and choose Cancel subscription, or choose Manage billing and cancel in the billing portal. The plan keeps working until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Billing then shows the date it ends.
Canceling doesn’t delete your computers or files. When the plan ends, the account follows the rules under After a plan ends. To delete computers and data, see Your data.
An organization with an active plan can’t be deleted. Cancel its plan first, and delete the organization after the paid period ends.
Receipts and payment details
Update your card, see invoices and download receipts from Manage billing on the Billing page. For an organization, billing email goes to its billing contact. See Organizations.
