# What Rootsy is

> Rootsy is a cloud for small software, where each project gets a Linux computer that sleeps when nothing needs it.

You build on your computer with your AI, and it serves what you build.

## A computer for each project

A Rootsy computer is a Linux machine with its own disk. You have root on it, so you can install what you need. Your files, packages and settings stay through sleep and restarts. [Your computer](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/computer.md) lists what comes installed.

You work on it from your browser. The workspace has a terminal, an editor, a Files window and a preview of what you're building.

## What it runs

A computer serves apps and static sites at its own HTTPS address. Connect a domain you own when you're ready. One computer can serve several apps, each on its own custom domain or path. See [Serve an app](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/serving.md).

It also runs jobs, such as an import or a nightly report. A schedule wakes the computer at the times you choose. See [Jobs](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/jobs.md).

## Asleep until needed

A computer sleeps when nothing needs it. A visitor, a schedule or an open workspace wakes it. Asleep, it spends no Runtime Credits. Awake, it spends them on what it uses, with a minimum for each awake hour. [Sleep and wake](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/sleep.md) has the rules.

That suits software people use now and then, like an internal tool or a weekly report.

## Where it doesn't fit

Only HTTP requests reach a computer. WebSocket upgrades don't pass through, and request bodies have a size cap. [Limits](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/limits.md#requests-to-your-apps) lists the rest. No plan's monthly Runtime Credits cover a computer awake all month, and Rootsy sells no extra credits. Software that must never sleep would be parked before the month ends. See [Plans and Runtime Credits](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/billing.md#what-spends-runtime-credits).

## Your AI comes with you

Claude Code comes installed and signs in with your own Claude account. Rootsy doesn't resell tokens. You can also work from an AI tool on your own machine over MCP. See [Your AI, your interface](https://rootsy.io/docs/ai-tools.md).

[Your first project](https://rootsy.io/docs/getting-started.md) walks through the first hour.
