> Personal accounts and organizations on Rootsy: creating one, inviting and removing members, what every member can do, and deleting it.

This page covers organizations: creating one, inviting and removing members, what members can do, billing contacts and deletion. Every Rootsy user has a personal account. An organization is a second kind of account that several people share. It holds its own computers, domains, members and plan.

## Personal account and organizations

Your personal account is created when you sign up. It lives at `/me` in the app, has only you in it, and has its own plan, computers and domains.

An organization lives at `/o/<slug>` in the app. Its computers, domains and plan belong to the organization itself, so when a member leaves, the computers stay. Switch between your personal account and your organizations with the account switcher in the sidebar.

Nothing moves between accounts. A computer created in your personal account stays there, and a personal plan doesn't cover an organization.

An organization needs its own plan before anyone can create a computer in it. If its plan ends, its computers go dormant until it has a plan again. Their files stay, but nobody can open them while the computers are dormant. Unpinned backups older than 7 days are deleted, and pinned backups stay. Download files and pin the backups you need before the plan ends. See [Billing](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/billing.md#after-a-plan-ends).

## Create an organization

Open the account switcher, choose **New organization**, enter a name and choose **Create organization**. You become its first member.

Rootsy builds the organization's URL slug from the name. It strips accents, keeps lowercase letters and digits, and turns each run of other characters into one `-`. If the slug is taken, Rootsy tries `<name>-2` through `<name>-6`, then a random `org-…` slug. Renaming an organization later changes its display name, and members see it right away.

You can create up to 3 organizations and belong to up to 10. Reaching either limit shows "You've reached the limit of organizations you can create." or "You've reached the limit of organizations you can be part of."

## Invite a member

Open the organization's **Settings**, go to **Members**, choose **Invite member** and enter their email address.

The person needs a Rootsy account first. Sign-up is invitation-only, so someone new asks support@rootsy.io for access before you invite them. If no account uses that email, the invite is refused with "No Rootsy account uses that email yet — they need to sign up first." Invite them again once they've signed up.

Rootsy emails them a link to `/invite/<token>`. The link expires after 7 days and works once. It accepts for whoever opens it while signed in to Rootsy, so don't forward it. The member list shows "Invitation pending" until it's accepted. From that row you can resend the invitation or cancel it. Resending sends a new link, restarts the 7 days and stops the old link working. Canceling makes the link invalid.

Each member can send or resend 10 invitations per hour for each organization. After that, the app shows "Too many invitations sent — please try again in a bit."

If the email didn't go out, the row shows "Send failed" and you can resend it.

## Accept an invitation

Open the link from the email while signed in, and choose **Join** followed by the organization's name. The organization then appears in your account switcher.

An invitation that has expired, been canceled or already been used shows "Invite no longer valid". Ask a member to send a new one. Joining counts toward the 10-organization limit, so at the limit, leave another organization first.

## What members can do

Every member has the same full access. There are no roles, no admins and no read-only members. Any member can:

- create, use, reset, restore and delete the organization's computers, and open their terminal and files
- add and remove custom domains
- choose or cancel the plan, and manage billing
- invite people, cancel invitations and remove any other member
- rename or delete the organization

MCP connections follow the same rule. A tool you connect can create, run commands on and delete computers in every organization you belong to, for as long as you're a member. See [Connect with MCP](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/mcp.md).

Invite only people you'd trust with everything in the organization.

## Leave an organization

Open the organization's **Settings**, go to **General**, and under **Leave organization**, choose **Leave** followed by the organization's name. You lose access to the organization's computers, domains and invoices in the dashboard and over MCP at once. A workspace you already had open can keep working for up to 24 hours. A member can invite you back later. The last member can't leave. Invite someone else first, or delete the organization.

## Remove a member

Open **Members**, open the actions menu on their row, and choose **Remove from organization**. Their dashboard and MCP access to the organization's computers ends at once. A workspace they already had open can keep working for up to 24 hours. The computers and data don't change. You can't remove the last member.

## Who receives billing email

Each organization has one billing contact, the email address Rootsy gives the payment provider for invoices and receipts. It starts as the person who created the organization. If the billing contact leaves or is removed, it passes to the member who joined earliest. The billing contact decides only where billing email goes. Any member can manage the plan. [Billing](https://rootsy.io/docs/reference/billing.md) covers plans and Runtime Credits.

## Delete an organization

Open **Settings**, go to **General**, and under **Delete organization**, choose the **Delete** button with the organization's name. Deletion is permanent for every member.

Rootsy refuses to delete an organization that still has computers. The app shows "Delete every computer in this organization first." Deleting a computer also deletes its files and backups.

An organization with an active paid plan can't be deleted either. Cancel the plan from the organization's billing page, then delete the organization once the paid period ends.
